Studying In Singapore
School Holidays are here!

So your exams are over and you have no idea how you are going to spend the next two months. Let’s just presume that you have all done well in your exams and are promoted to the next class worriless. Sixty days is a lot of time and there is plenty you can do to pass that time advantageously.

Take up a language!
You must be aware of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s National Day message about learning another language. He stressed the need for young people to equip
themselves with the language skills to communicate with the world and help strengthen Singapore’s multi-racial compact in the long run. Third languages have already been introduced as part of curriculum in schools. From Next year onward, students taking up Malay and Chinese as a third language will enjoy two bonus points for Junior college entry.

But for those of you, who aren’t too keen on loading an extra subject for the whole year, fearing the increased stress level, consider taking up a language course that you can master in Two months. Schools like Cambridge Institute not only ensure that you will be able to converse in a language in two months, but also award you with a certificate of completion. Cambridge Institute has been offering language courses thought by certified and experienced teachers for the past ten years.

Learning a new language can easily be done at your own comfort, at home (something like DIY (do-it-yourself). You can buy those cassette tapes with book which explain. But it’s different when you are learning a language in a school- being in the midst of a class/an environment which allows you to speak or practice the language with your classmates. To find out more about languages and its courses, visit www.cambridge.com.sg

Apart from language courses, there are always other things/skills you can pick up to better yourself. Flip through the classifieds or browse the net and you are sure to find courses that are creative and fun to last you the holidays. Attend free seminars on investment; take up hairstyling or a professional make-up course. Something is always better than nothing. So start inquiring now!

Love thy Environment

For those of you who are keeping your younger siblings in mind, bring them down to the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden- Asia’s first such environmental encouraging playground. Situated at the junction of Dunearn and Kheam Hock Roads, this place is meant to introduce children to the world of nature and environment. At different corners, the young can learn about photosynthesis, nutrient recycling processes and encouraging methods of energy usage. Lots of Science.

There are plenty of other activities that will really be enjoyed and most importantly, it will be unforgettable learning experience. Admission is free and open to children up to the age of 12.

Family Day!

Out of the sixty days, it would be advisable for you to spend some time with your folks and siblings. Most of the time, it’s your parent’s who are the one’s organizing little family spend-together. They try to coax you and your siblings for dinners, movies or even picnics. What they suggest may not necessarily be exciting at all times, no doubt. So for a change, why don’t you organize something? Tell your parents that you are planning something for the family since the holidays are creeping up. Ask them if there is a budget you can work around. If you have a healthy budget, then plan a trip or even a short stay at Sentosa. If the budget is extremely low, then plan a home-cooked meal, rent a movie and think about a good conversational topic that the family can indulge in- here are a few topics:

-Future plans (have each member contribute something their future plans)

-Further studies (can your parents help you with studying abroad)

-Gossip about someone you don’t like (cousins, aunties, colleagues)

-Life in general

-how your parents met

If you want to do something different and memorable, think along these suggestions:

  • volunteer together at an old folks home/ children’s home
  • attend a workshop/learn a skill together
  • re-paint the house together (suggest creative colours)

The idea of organizing a family activity is about where you spend it but how you spent it. The time you spend with your family should bring you closer and create memories that cannot be bought.

Get a Part-time job

Whenever I had my school holidays, I would seize the opportunity and look for a job. I was lucky my parents never said anything. My very first job was as a cashier at Oriental Supermarket in Marsiling. Every holiday after that was a new experience for me and a window that exposed me to new things and introduced me to many people. I grew to be more daring and confident. Starting work at the young age of 14 is a decision that I will always be proud and unregretful about. There are many jobs opportunities offered to the younger generation now. Fast food restaurants are common grounds where you can find part-time work and also form a good habit to manage the money you earn. When you work, responsibility is one of the qualities you will learn along with the list of advantageous. With that little money, you will be forced to spend wisely, pay responsibly for your own bills as that’s the least our parents expect.

There are plenty of other things you can do during your school holidays. These two months should be used to relax your mind from any tension and worries. However, if you are sitting for an important exam next: N’levels, O’level’s, A’ level’s, I suggest you utilize these two months to revise. Form study groups with your friends or cousins, so the environment is not that tedious and empowering.

Remember time is precious, so make full and beneficial use of your holidays.
