How To Choose A School For Your MBA

Choosing a good school is, of course, very important.

ut you also need to choose a school that is suitable for you. Although this article is targeted at MBA students, the guidelines may be useful in helping you choose a course.

Here is a list of 10 things that you should look out for:

1. The Curriculum
Does the curriculum match your needs i.e. will you get to learn what you have set out to learn and what you want to study. You also need to look at how much course work there is, are there any projects, continual assessments, or just 1 final exam to write. You might also have to write a thesis or do a research project.

2. The lecturers
Consider where the lecturers themselves studied, and what kind of work experience they have. Have they been exposed to the 'real' business world, or have they been academics all their lives?

3. The number of publications the school has
A well respected school will have some publications in the more important journals, or have published some books.

4. The age group of the students
Most MBA students are between 25 and 35. This is good as they will have a lot of experience they can share with you. If they are too young, and straight out of university, they might not have any valuable experience to share.

5. Where are the students from?
Also look at the countries the students come from. It is ultimately up to you to decide where you would be most comfortable.

6. The CV's of ex-students
You might want to look at what type of professionals do this course: engineers, marketing executives. so that you'll know whether the course is right for you.

7. The jobs that students hold after getting the degree
The most important thing you want to ensure is that you will get a good job after graduating, so find out what kind of jobs the school's graduates hold. If they have good positions, the school will be more than happy to tell you about them.

8. Facilities
What kind of facilities are there: libraries, computer rooms, sports halls. What are the opening hours and how do you get access to them (do you have to pay an extra fee?)

9. Links to businesses
Find out which businesses the school is linked to. If they are linked to factories, then it is a good sign if you want to do production management, but not if you want to do medical sales.

10. Careers Support
Does the school have any career counsellors to help you? And do they have recruitment drives or contacts with employers?
